Every sick child has someone standing just outside the door.

When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the whole family is affected. The child with cancer faces a journey no child should have to endure, while their siblings often quietly adjust to a new normal of appointments, worry, and change. Their experiences may be different, but both children need support, connection, and moments to simply be kids.

Vhito’s Vision is to be there for both — the patient, and the siblings.

Vhito’s Vision is coming soon.

Why we exist

One child gets cared for. The other one learns to disappear.

For twelve years our family lived on an oncology floor. We learned every nurse’s name. We learned how to sleep in hospital chairs. And we learned the thing nobody warns you about: while one child is surrounded by people, the child beside them is silently pushed aside.

There are playrooms on the oncology floor. Often, the brothers and sisters of the cancer patients aren’t allowed in them. Vhito could be in one of these play areas while his brother Vinnie was just outside the room — by himself. That isn’t anybody’s fault. It is simply how the system works, and it is what we are here to change.

Vhito’s Vision exists to reach the siblings, giving them something to hold, something to do, and eventually somewhere to go that they get to choose.

In his name

Vhito

He fought for twelve years. Everywhere we went, somebody knew him. Strangers would call across a parking lot, “Hey Vhito, how’s it going?” He’d smile and turn to us and say “I have no idea who that is.” Rooms changed when he walked into them.

He loved helping people. He loved sloths. His favorite color was purple.

We were going to start this mission together. Now we’re starting it for him.

What we are building

Four pillars are planned:

  • The Comfort Companion Program

    Starting at launch

A plush sloth named Vee, put into the hands of the child with cancer and the siblings beside them, on the oncology floor or in the emergency department.

Vee, the plush sloth given through the Comfort Companion Program.

    Meet Vee.

Vhito was obsessed with sloths. So the companion that goes out under his name is a sloth named Vee.

  • Bright Boxes

    Starting at launch

Activity boxes for the patient, matched to a child’s age, for the ones who cannot leave their room because of an infection risk or a transplant.

  • Family Playrooms

    In early conversations

A room inside the hospital that brothers and sisters are allowed into. Somewhere a family can be in the same space at the same time, which sounds small until it is the thing you cannot have.

  • Sibling Getaways

    The goal

The whole family goes. The sibling picks where. After years of being the one who waits in the car, in the hallway, at grandma’s — they choose, and everyone follows.
